Onion Hands

If you know me well, and particularly my eating habits, it will be of no surprise to you that I thoroughly dislike onion. Finely chopped, hidden amongst the other vegies, sure, I'll consume that. Don't even start me on those long strips that are found at a BBQ or in a stir fry. I wont make much of a fuss if it's on my plate, I'll just leave it on the side.

But whatever you do, please don't ask me to chop it up!

In the past my voluntary ineptitude has led to some interesting compromises (especially when I was threatened to have my food withheld unless I participated in the cutting of onion). It's amazing what can be found lying around to allow an individual to chop a vegetable without actually having any contact with it.

Ultimately the aversion is because I don't like Onion Hands. Maybe I'm hypersensitive (read: soft) but I don't particularly like waking up the next morning and no matter how many times I've washed my hands and how smelly the soap there is an overwhelming residue onion stench.

However a recent event has led to a change:
I was supposed to be helping someone else make some dinner for an event. I ended up in the stress of the evening doing it all on my lonesome. The instructions were for homemade pizza, ingredients the usual ~ meaning onion included. Embittered I chopped those onions. Embittered I awoke the next morning to the stench of Onion Hands. Lying in bed grumpy at the lasting effects of the onion stench I thought of another pair of hands:

'Then he said to Thomas, "Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe."' See here for the full story.

... and I was annoyed about getting a little lingering smell on my hands. So quickly I forget how I can honour my Lord because of what He's done first and the joy found in the event that led to the marks on his hands. We are called to be joyful always, and take delight in serving others, even when it's not our favourite activity.

So the change?
Give me a call if you need some onions chopped.
Bring on the Onion Hands.
